Lydia painted the bead-board backs of the built-in bookcases the same gray as the dining room. “It tied the two spaces together and accentuated the beautiful series of three arches,” says Lydia. The three exposed Edison bulb fixtures above the dining room table lend an industrial yet timeworn feel that flows throughout the home. “A very special element of home design incorporates relaxing and remembering,” says Lydia. “There is something powerful in calling to mind things of the past that have had a positive impact.”
She wrapped a beloved book collection in gold-patterned paper to add warmth to the surrounding cool grays.
She and her husband, Mike, made the clothesline-style calendar—with mail tags printed with numbers transferred via acetone—and it hangs above an antique record player that belonged to Mike’s grandmother.
