Rustic Yet Elegant Cabin Decor

The cabin tradition inspires the construction of many homes that get demanding use in the winter. But while the durable finishes withstand pools of melting snow and inadvertently tramped mud, for those whose tastes lean away from rustic and toward elegant, there are design approaches that introduce graceful sophistication and panache.

The overall effect of this home is light and elegant due to the careful efforts of the designer. However, by looking closely, it’s apparent that the home’s bones—the plank flooring, the simple wood trim, and the straightforward lines of the stairway—are tough and durable.

The designer’s efforts are evident in the curving sculptural lines of the furnishings, as well as how the furniture appears to float or hover over the floor rather than rest on it. Even when upholstered in a durable grade, the leather’s finish is lustrous and its champagne hue brings sophistication. A similar attention to detail extends to throws, which are neatly folded instead of casually gathered and draped.

Other touches separate the home’s design from traditional cabin features: The gray tone for the accent walls is urbane, and the uncluttered design leaves large spaces unfurnished and employs area rugs with delicate abstract designs in subtle colors. Even the lighting relies upon few lamps, which feature small, light bases and plain horizontal shades.

Similar to the furnishings, the sculptural accessories rest on thin metal supports and appear to float. The clear blown-glass pieces reinforce a sense of transparency, as do the narrow frames for the matted artwork. With careful attention to furnishings, accessories, lighting, and artwork, the space achieves a graceful refinement.

Style Idea

Sturdy but comfortable furnishings offer an invitation to come in and relax. There’s room enough for the family to join together for games or a night of watching TV.

Decor Note

Arrange artwork along a stairway, where it will be best viewed when ascending and descending the stairs. It naturally makes for a visually pleasing arrangement.
