TCJ: When designing your daughters’ rooms, how did you keep the spaces kid-friendly but beautiful, and what ways did you let them help design?

EK: With my four girls, I try to narrow down design choices to two or three that I know would work within a space, and then I’ll let them pick from those options. They “help” me style and arrange spaces in our home, and this gives them a sense of ownership in the projects . . . which honestly cuts way down on them messing with décor in the main areas. I also make sure that their playroom and bedrooms aren’t so precious that they feel nervous to express themselves creatively in there! I let them change pillows, flowers, and tabletop décor in those rooms, and thus they take ownership of their spaces!

TCJ: Mom, blogger, designer—you do it all! How do you find time to get everything done and still have a gorgeous home?

EK: I don’t! Is that a bad answer?! The honest truth is that I don’t get it all done, and my home is far from perfect. I’m a big-time planner and have a sort of tunnel vision when it comes to accomplishing my goals which helps produce the end result, but you know what? We do a whole lot of resting, playing and just LIVING in this home of ours, and the laundry/emails/to-do lists can wait a bit. Our life is swirly and loud and exhausting, and I wouldn’t trade it for anything . . . even if laundry piles loom higher than my children’s heads most days.
