Her favorite thing to paint is people. She started with painting portraits of her children, and she now paints people and animals based on photos. Her love of portraits comes from trying to capture the person’s personality in the painting. She says that the eyes are where she finds a person’s personality the most. It isn’t easy to do, but it is an absolute joy for her when she gets it right. “I love it when someone says, ‘You have really captured who that person is,’” she says.

Sue also paints the sights of her town, the things that are often overlooked because people are too busy to notice. She says she can drive by the cows on a farm near her home every day, and then one day the light hits the scene perfectly, and she pulls over to take a photo so she can paint it. “My inspiration over the years is the beauty that’s all around me that most people take for granted,” she says, “I don’t paint outside of the box, it isn’t really contemporary, it’s what I see.”
