Outside, a side yard was repurposed into a delightful patio space perfect for warm coastal evenings. Partitioned for metal sheeting on a privacy wall, this little oasis is out of sight of the main house. Although Carol admits she was hesitant to entertain large groups early on, a dinner party for 12 cured her concerns. “I realized that our group would have no more room if we were dining together at a restaurant,” she says. “With that logic in mind, I now host with confidence.” And oftentimes Carol’s guests leave intrigued: “Our neighbors and friends tell us all the time that they’d enjoy this style of living. It’s a far cry from the carriage-house apartments you used to see—choppy and tiny with a hot plate for a kitchen. We’ve created something special here, and it’s catching on!”
