The reign of all-white kitchens draws to a close as bolder hues take their turn in the spotlight. Painted a moody black, this kitchen stands as a focal point with its deep shade doubling as a grounding element for the home. A Carrara marble adds contrast as it tops the island and perimeter countertops, even continuing up the backsplash for greater impact. Leather barstools and rustic wood touches soften the space. From earthy color schemes to warm wood accents and an abundance of windows, homeowners and designers alike are looking to nature for refreshing, timeless style. Inset cabinets painted a custom blend by Sherwin-Williams infuse the primarily neutral space with a dash of color. Incorporating wood accents—whether it be an island or a trim along a range hood—lends additional charm. The versatility of organic-inspired design allows it to lean both contemporary and traditional depending on the finishing accents and fixtures. For those still captivated by an all-white kitchen, the trend is still holding on with a few slight changes. Trade in stark whites for creamy alternatives that capture the clean and bright aesthetic with an added layer of warmth. Countertops and backsplashes offer a chance to incorporate pure white—especially if it’s balanced with the darker veining of the material. Upholstered barstools in rich grays or neutral tones emphasize this subtle shift in scheme.

At first glance, it’s the island’s deep blue hue that draws the eye to the kitchen’s central gathering place as it departs from its surroundings. Additional details keep the focus moving throughout the space—from the walls tiled in a striking geometric pattern to the brass-strapped range hood that coordinates with the light fixtures. Upon closer inspection, it’s the thoughtful inclusion of custom drawer inserts that steal the show for this homeowner, taking organization to new heights.

They say not to judge a book by its cover, and it looks like the same can be said for cabinetry. Love the idea of going bold, but not quite ready to make the commitment? Play it safe when painting the exterior of your cabinets, saving the surprising colorful panache for the interiors.
