Tour This English-Inspired Garden

Lap pool in the middle of a garden
Pots of boxwoods add English formality to the brick-framed saltwater lap pool. Pennsylvania bluestone paves the deck and gazebo floor.

Until a few years ago, the entire backyard was a riot of blooms. Len had always wanted a swimming pool, however. So four years ago they hired landscape designer Peter Falkner to redesign the lower two-thirds of the garden. He put in a stone-paved terrace next to the house as an outdoor dining area. Then he built a lap pool into the hill, framing it with brick retaining walls that echo the older brick wall. He and Barbara collaborated with builder Chris Franks to design the gazebo beside the pool. Its standing-seam metal roof and cupola imitate the roof of the garden shed on the upper level. “It was important to me that it all flow and blend together,” Barbara says, “so it looks like it has always been that way. Peter did an excellent job of making my yard and garden all come together.”
