These homeowners left the rush of a bustling Northern city for leisurely living on the coast.
When Karl and Julie Chortanoff decided to embark on a fresh start, they knew what they wanted: a Craftsman-style cottage near the coast. A quick Internet search brought the Chortanoffs straight to The Cottages at Ocean Isle Beach in North Carolina. They took an overnight visit and fell in love. The couple left their traditional two-story home near Hersheypark in Pennsylvania for a one-story, three-bedroom coastal cottage nestled in the heart of the charming cottage community.
When this newly retired couple—and their miniature golden doodle, Argos—decided to move down South, they went all in. “When we sold our house in Pennsylvania, we sold everything to consignment stores or friends so we could start fresh down here,” Julie says. Built by The Cottage Building Company, the Chortanoffs were able to customize the floor plan of their home-to-be, selecting tapered columns for the front porch and repeating the motif for the fireplace, adding a pocket door to separate the guest rooms from the main house and requesting built-in shelving in one of the bedrooms.
