The couple tackled the home with a fervor, removing carpeting, tile, and wallpaper and adding hardwood floors, new appliances, and marble countertops. Popcorn ceilings needed to be scraped, kitchen fixtures needed to be updated, and unforeseen challenges needed to be faced down. But little by little, their Midwest fixer-upper began to feel like home.
Throughout the renovation, the couple remained flexible in the face of unexpected challenges. When stubborn 40-year-old wallpaper in the master bedroom refused to relinquish its hold without taking drywall with it, they opted to prime and paint over it instead. And when it was discovered that rubber padding had melted into the wood of the central staircase, they spent weeks hand-scraping until the structure was restored to its original beauty.
