“I happened upon the cottages and loved their charm, but they don’t change hands often,” Stan says. But by chance one day his realtor overheard that a woman was selling her cottage. “I told the realtor I wanted to buy it, but she said, ‘You haven’t even seen it.’ I knew it didn’t matter because it wouldn’t look the same when I got finished,” he says. Over the years, Stan made cosmetic changes such as new appliances, countertops, and paint colors but left the walls as originally constructed.
The properties may not be on the market often, but when they are, the sale happens quickly. Caroline, down the court, was living in Miami and bought her cottage site unseen over the phone. Lula, another homeowner, loves the cottages so much she bought one and several years later sold it so she could buy a different one.
