Another design tip Sharon reveals that will help make the space feel as open as possible is avoiding the popular trend of hanging pendant lighting over the bar. “The contractor thought we were crazy,” Sharon says, “but we did recessed lighting because we didn’t want to close off the kitchen—we wanted to keep it feeling very open.” Now that the kitchen is complete Kim says the 4×7.5–foot bar is one of her favorite additions. “It’s probably the greatest thing we did,” she shares. “It’s great for serving while entertaining, as well as for everyday use. And that’s where my boys love to be. We have two tables and all these chairs, and I have to force them to come to the table to have a family meal!”
